Transitional Kindergarten

Transitional Kindergarten

What is Transitional Kindergarten?

Transitional Kindergarten is a pre-kindergarten program that builds a bridge between the preschool years and kindergarten. With the increasingly academic demands of Kindergarten, some parents wonder if their children are ready for the traditional Kindergarten program. Transitional Kindergarten is designed for (but not restricted to) students who turn 5 between September 2 and April 2 and may not be socially, developmentally and/or academically ready for traditional Kindergarten. This program will provide children with the gift of time to build necessary social, developmental and academic skills for success throughout their school careers. The program will be based on the Common Core Kindergarten Standards with focused instruction in literacy and numeracy along with strong emphasis on self regulation and social engagement.

What is the Transitional Kindergarten classroom program?

Transitional Kindergarten follows the full day schedule of Kindergarten. Our daily schedule includes whole group instruction and activities, small group instruction, independent and “hands-on” learning.

How can families be involved in Transitional Kindergarten?

Communication between home and school is essential in helping your child succeed. You are encouraged to actively participate in your child’s learning journey at home and at school. Parents are encouraged to volunteer in class.
Your child’s teacher will meet with you on a regular basis to discuss your child’s progress and ways you can support him/her at home. Assessments and teacher observations will be used to monitor your child’s growth and progress through out the year. Staff will use this information to guide instruction, individualized to meet your child’s needs. At the end of the Transitional Kindergarten year, your child will be enrolled in Traditional Kindergarten.

Working together will help you stay connected! We look forward to welcoming you to Transitional Kindergarten! To register, please stop by the Lincoln School Office.

Who benefits from Transitional Kindergarten?

Many parents feel that their child may not be quite ready for the academic rigor of Kindergarten. These students often have a fall birthday and may still be developing skills for academic work.

Transitional Kindergarten benefits children who need time to develop socially, emotionally, physically, and/or academically. This developmental program acts as a bridge between a flexible environment and the more structured academic setting of Kindergarten.

Transitional Kindergarten gives children the opportunity to access the Kindergarten state curriculum standards in a classroom that implements small groups and “hand on” learning to provide a language rich experience.
Transitional Kindergarten prepares students for the social and academic expectations of Traditional Kindergarten the following year. It truly gives children the gift of time.

Will Transitional Kindergarten be the best option?

Since birth, you’ve watched your child grow and develop. You have noted your child’s height and weight, when she/he crawled, stood, walked, and spoke those first words. Although child development follows a fairly predictable path, we know that every child develops at his/her own pace. Think about your child in the areas of language, social, cognitive and motor skills development and consider what program will best meet his/her needs. You know your child best and will ultimately decide if Transitional Kindergarten makes sense for your child.
